Procedures - Urushi

Lacquer (Urushi in Japanese) has long been used by Japanese people, dating back in their history to the pre-historic era. The speciality of Urushi is recognized as not only for its design but also for its durability or resistance to humidity. This significant Urushi is also one of the Fujiwara family of the Hiraizumi culture. Of course the art and skills of Urushi have been used by eager Iwayado craftsmen.
Both the Fukiurushi-Nuri or Kijiro-Nuri are a culmination of efforts and this is the very point of everlasting fineness of our Iwayado-Tansu furniture. This procedure allows for the clarity of the natural wood grain and causes its further prominence year after year. It is the essence and nature of the Urushi technique.
